PLAE shoes can accommodate many kids who wear AFOs (ankle-foot orthotics). the roomier toe box, removable insoles, wide opening, and interchangeable tas (velcro straps) may help with the fit.
PLAE shoes come with unique interchangeable tabs that come in 4 sizes for a more complete fit. we recommend choosing a large or extra-large tab. if the AFO is only on one foot, use the longer tabs for one shoe and keep the regular tabs on the other shoe.
measure both the shoe size and tab size by printing the PLAE fit kit to determine the best fit for your child's foot. be sure to measure with your child wearing their orthotic. you can also reference our tab lengths on our sizing page.
if you are not quite sure if your child's brace will work with our shoes, or if you are not sure on the size, just send us two photos with their braces or orthotics on. for the first picture, have your child stand directly on the PLAE fit kit and take a picture directly down (birds-eye view) so we can see the length and width of your child's feet. for the second picture, take a side view of your child's foot so we can determine the right size tabs. simple email the two photos to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll have our fit expert give you our best recommendation. while we'll do everything we can to find the best recommended fit, you know your child's feet best and should decide what size will be best based on your personal experience with their fit and previous shoes worn.
